Choosing an extractor hood? Avoid the 5 most common mistakes

A Novy extractor hood is extremely powerful to get rid of annoying odours and fumes while cooking. Planning a new kitchen and in need of a new extractor hood? We would like to give you the 5 most common mistakes. So you can be sure to make the right choice!

As a (amateur) chef, do you regularly indulge yourself in the kitchen? Then you know only too well that a powerful extractor hood is essential for removing annoying odours and fumes. Telescopic, discreetly in the ceiling, an island cooker hood as a striking eye-catcher or rather an integrated worktop extractor? There is a solution for everyone in the extensive Novy range, both in terms of design and functionality.

Yet there are some things you should pay extra attention to when choosing your extractor hood. Because we consider good advice very important, we list the 5 most common mistakes for you.

1. Think wide enough

Cooking fumes do not rise straight up, but blow out at an angle. So make sure your extractor hood is at least as wide as your hob. This will ensure proper operation. Does your dream kitchen have an island layout? Then choose a wider model to ensure proper capture of the cooking fumes.

2. Respect the specific installation height

In your Novy extractor hood manual, you will always find the minimum and maximum mounting height. The mounting height varies according to the type of extractor hood and type of hob. Follow the specific guidelines of your extractor hood for optimal safety and for proper capture of cooking vapours and odours.

3. Monitor length, diameter and material of your ducting

Your Novy extractor hood is a strong piece of engineering. To get the most performance out of it, there are some crucial factors for the ducting. Just think about its length, diameter and material.

  • Length: the ducting should preferably be as short and as straight as possible. Every bend and extra metre of a duct causes a loss in extraction capacity.
  • Limit the length of the ducting to a maximum of 13 metres, where a 90° bend counts as 3 metres of pipe and a 45° bend as 2 metres of pipe. Use undulating bends for good air conduction and choose a suitable external wall grille or roof vent flange with minimal resistance.
  • Diameter: It is important to choose the right diameter. This corresponds to the diameter of the connection spout of your extractor hood. Do not take ducting with a smaller diameter than that prescribed by Novy. This could make the extractor hood produce more noise and reduce its capacity.
  • Material: Choose smooth ductwork for your exhaust. Keep lengths of flexible ducting to a minimum. Unevenness in these types of ducts results in higher air resistance and thus in lower extraction capacity and more noise.

4. Balance the extraction and air supply ratio when extracting to the outside

A extractor hood extracts as much air as it supplies, regardless of the size of the kitchen. Is there too little air supply? Then the extractor hood does not work ideally and this can result in as much as 50% efficiency loss. Air supply can be obtained through an open window or door or an air supply grille.

5. Match your extractor hood and ventilation system

A recirculating extractor hood filters cooking fumes, stops grease particles and absorbs odours. In this way, the extractor hood brings purified air back into the kitchen. The moisture from cooking fumes is absorbed and removed by your ventilation system. If this is not properly coordinated with your extractor hood, condensation can develop because the moist air cannot escape.

Do you have a ventilation system D at home? This system uses the heat from exhausted indoor air to heat supplied cold outdoor air. These two air flows are always in balance. An extractor hood with an outlet to the outside can unbalance this ventilation system. With ventilation system D, choosing a Novy recirculating extractor hood is the best option. Our Pure technology is standard or optional in many models. 100% delicious cooking, 0% annoying odours!
