How to clean your cooker hood in 3 steps?

Cleaning your extractor hood is sometimes overlooked by many people. Yet it is important to clean an extractor hood properly on a regular basis. Cooking makes the extractor hood dirty and greasy, and this dirt and grease also gets into the filters. Regular cleaning prevents grease accumulation, which reduces the extraction power and even creates a fire hazard. Proper and regular cleaning is important for the life and proper functioning of your extractor hood. Discover the three-step plan below for cleaning your extractor hood:

This is what you need for cleaning your extractor hood:

Good to know before you start cleaning:

  • Let the lighting cool down sufficiently before cleaning the extractor hood
  • Never use aggressive, abrasive or chlorine-containing products
  • Do not use high-pressure cleaners or steam jet devices

Step 1: Clean the grease filters of your extractor hood

When the grease filters are full of grease, they no longer work at their best. Moreover, too much grease accumulation creates a risk of fire. It is therefore important to clean the grease filters properly on a regular basis. We recommend cleaning the grease filters once a month. Most Novy models tell you to clean the filter after 20 cooking hours. But how do you clean these filters? We'll explain that to you below:

Metal grease filters can be easily removed, making them easy to clean. You can clean the Novy grease filters by hand, but they can also simply go in the dishwasher. Do use a common and mild detergent for this. Do not place the grease filters in the dishwasher together with other dishes. Choose a programme with a minimum temperature of 50 degrees. The filter may become slightly discoloured in the dishwasher. This does not affect the function of the filter. If you prefer cleaning by hand, immerse it in hot or boiling water with a mild degreasing detergent. It is best to use a brush for cleaning. After cleaning, rinse the filter under the tap with warm water and let it drain well.

Note: carbon filters cannot be cleaned
Our recirculating extractor hood use carbon filters. With these types of extractor hoods, cooking odours are neutralised internally and the purified air is blown back into the kitchen. However, carbon filters cannot be cleaned. To keep your recirculating extractor hood working properly, it is important to change the carbon filters regularly. Step 2: Clean the inside of the extractor hood

After the grease filters, it is time to clean the inside of the extractor hood. We recommend cleaning the inside every two months. To do this, it is best to use a soft microfibre cloth. Dampen the cloth and rinse regularly during cleaning.

Step 3: Clean the outside of the extractor hood

The outside of the extractor hood gets greasy while cooking. To keep your kitchen fresh and clean, it is important to clean the outside of the extractor hood frequently. It is best to go over the outside of the extractor hood immediately after cooking with a damp microfibre cloth and a mild detergent. Keep in mind that the exterior of extractor hood are made of different materials. Stainless steel/inox extractor hood in particular require special cleaning. Maintenance on stainless steel is best done with the Novy Stainless steel cleaner. This is a special cleaner that completely degreases the material without damaging it. Always clean the extractor hood with clean water after cleaning and then dry it with a soft cloth.
