Is my old cooker hood due for replacement?

Is your cooker hood making a strange noise or not sucking out cooking fumes and odors as well? Then maybe your cooker hood needs to be replaced. But how exactly can you find out? A good cooker hood can last for years, if you maintain it properly, of course. Think about replacing the filters and regularly cleaning the inside and outside. However, there comes a time when the cooker hood stops working properly and needs to be replaced. In this article, we explain the lifespan of most cooker hoods and how you can extend it. We also tell you how you can tell when the hood needs replacement or maintenance.

How long does a cooker hood last?

Do you have an old cooker hood hanging around your home? Or would you like to know how long a new cooker hood will last? Good news, provided you maintain it properly, a cooker hood will easily last between 10 and 20 years. After that time, the cooker hood will not perform as well or things will unfortunately break down. You'd rather not want this because a properly functioning cooker hood absorbs all cooking fumes, grease particles and food odors. This keeps your kitchen fresh and clean and maintains good air quality. Is your cooker hood still broken? Then don't wait too long to buy a new cooker hood. We offer a suitable cooker hood for every kitchen layout or cooking need.

When choosing a new cooker hood, the warranty period is an important factor to consider in your decision. The legal warranty for a cooker hood is two years. At Novy, providing good service is paramount. As a quality brand, we therefore guarantee not two but five years of warranty from the date of purchase after registering your cooker hood. This also applies to our other products. Read more about the warranty period and registering your product here.

Test yourself at home to see if your cooker hood is still working properly

The cooker hood is on the highest setting and yet you feel that cooking fumes and odors linger in the kitchen. This usually means that your cooker hood is in need of maintenance or perhaps replacement. Would you like to test at home if your cooker hood is still working properly? Then try one of the methods below:

  • Test the extraction power. Hold a sheet of kitchen paper against the bottom of the cooker hood and test at each position to see if the piece of paper sticks. Does the piece of paper stick neatly? Then there is nothing wrong. If it falls down, the filters may be clogged. If not, then the cooker hood probably needs replacement.

  • Check the drain. Does your cooker hood have recirculation exhaust? If so, the cooker hood uses a carbon filter to clean the air. Carbon filters are replacement parts. Is the extraction no longer working optimally? Then the carbon filter may need to be replaced.

  • Check the distance between the cooktop and the cooker hood. Has the cooker hood not been in place for very long but you already notice that it is not working properly? Then check the distance between the cooktop and the cooker hood. This is because if the distance is too large or too small, the cooker hood will not work optimally. Check the manual for the correct dimensions.

How can you extend the life of a cooker hood?

When you buy a new cooker hood, you naturally want it to last as long as possible. How can you extend the life of your cooker hood? Here are some handy tips:

  • Clean the cooker hood regularly. Not only should the outside be grease-free, the inside should also be cleaned regularly. Think about cleaning the grease filters but also the inside and the outlet of the cooker hood.

  • Clean and replace filters. Clean your cooker hood's grease filters regularly. On average, the grease filters should be cleaned once a month. We recommend replacing the grease filters after five years of heavy use to maintain optimal results. Do you have a cooker hood with recirculation? Then it is important to replace the carbon filter on time. The carbon filter cleans the air before it is blown back into the room. When you need to replace the carbon filter depends on the product. Novy uses unique high-quality carbon filters that last even longer. On this page you can read all about Novy's Monoblock filters.

  • Motor cleaning. Occasionally, you will also need to clean the cooker hood's motor. To do this, you first unplug the hood. Then you take out the grease filters so you can get to the motor. You then clean it with a mild degreaser and a damp microfiber cloth. After cleaning, dry the motor well and replace the grease filters.
